Perennial rivals MP United Football Club and Paire Football Club will collide in the finals of the 2014 FA Boys and Girls Challenge Cup, following their separate semis victories last Saturday at the Hopwood Junior High School Field.
MP United co-ed U12 marched into the finals first after slipping past Matansa co-ed U12, 1-0, while Paire co-ed U12 downed Tan Holdings co-ed U12, 3-1, to force a rematch of the 2011 Cup finals. MP United won the finale three years ago, 1-0, while Matansa ruled the 2012 edition of the tournament for co-ed U12 teams and girls U15 squads. Last year, Paire attempted to return to the finals after it bowed to MP United anew and the latter went on to clinch its second championship after shutting out Matansa in the 2013 finals, 3-0.
This season, MP United has a chance to go for back-to-back crown and third since the inception of the tournament four years ago after eliminating Matansa in the first semis game. MP United recorded the lone goal in the semis match off a Matansa error in the 29th minute.
In the second Final Four pairing, Jamin Elliot lifted Paire to victory, scoring back-to-back goals against Tan Holdings. Elliot nailed his first goal in the 10th minute and got his second one in the 35th. Tan Holdings was without a goal in the first half, but attempted a comeback in the second frame when Thaiphi Austria found the back of the net early in that period to force a standoff. However, Elliot earned his second goal and four minutes later, Raffi Lee canned the insurance.
Paire will play the winner-take-all finals against MP United this Thursday at 4:30pm at the San Antonio Elementary School Field. San Antonio will also host today’s consolation match between Matansa U12 and Tan Holdings U12 at 4:30 pm.
